Mia Thermopolis did not sit down in that chair JUST to look different. She sat down to stop hiding. Elle Woods did not go to Harvard ONLY to prove a point. She went because she trusted herself when no one else did. Andie Anderson blew up her entire assignment because she REFUSED to let someone else write her story.
Over the course of my own career, I have been told I am too loud, too enthusiastic, and too positive for people who wanted me to fit their version of professionalism. Fifteen years in marketing, media, and advertising, growing to Director of Paid Media, leading a team of 12, and every room said the same thing. Every time, I did what Mia did, Elle did, and Andie did. I decided my career was mine to lead, not theirs to design.
That experience sent me back to study the science behind why leadership works when it does and why it so often does not. I earned my master's in Organizational Development and Change, got certified in change management and emotional intelligence, and then pivoted into talent development before building What You Do Matters from the ground up.
The people I work with are brilliant, capable, and already doing the work. What they are missing is not effort. It is the exact playbook, the specific skills, and the right people around them to make it happen.
