Are you a lurker? π
In case you didnβt know (and you probably didnβt), I spent seven years of my career immersed in the NKBA (thatβs the National Kitchen & Bath Association, btw), while working in marketing at MoenβAmericaβs most trusted faucet brand.
Trade shows, events, and partnerships with big names like CondΓ© Nast shaped not just my career, but my sense of whatβs possible when you get involved with an organization (of any kind!).
Well, talk about a full circle moment: On November 4th, Iβll be back with the National Kitchen & Bath Association after almost 3 years, leading a continuing education session! Iβm speaking on one of my favorite topics: Pivot Paths.
Being invited back to the NKBA to speak reminded me of something so important to our careers: the power of participation.
No matter your industry, lurking will only get you so far.
If you want energy, growth, and career confidence, you HAVE to participate. So where do you start, and how can you find a space where you feel comfortable enough to get involved?
Hereβs my quick checklist to help you decide if a group is worth your time:
Push + Validate: Will this community both challenge and affirm you? You need both.
Virtual + IRL Options: Does the organization fit your modern schedule with flexible ways to engage?
Vibe Check: Is there real chemistry with other members? Do you feel like you belong?
Set a Goal: How will you actively engage instead of just consuming content and events?
Need a little inspiration to help you find your own community to join? Here are a few of my favorite communities (past + present):
Together Digital β for women in digital marketing.
MHEDA β incredible development opportunities in the material handling industry.
ANA β the Association of National Advertisers.
Pivot Point β my own network for women making bold career & leadership moves.
Growth happens when you show up AND join in. So get off the sidelines and participate with me!!
Leadership Lessons from Dancing with the Stars
Iβll admit itβ¦Iβm OBSESSED with this season of Dancing With the Stars.
(Robert Irwin is an absolute delight, and what a legacy heβs carrying forward in honor of his dad, the legendary croc hunter & conservationist, Steve Irwin!)
But beyond the sparkles and sambas, DWTS is all about the community.
πͺ© The professional dancers are their own tight-knit group, on and off stage.
πͺ© Past contestants keep showing up in the audience to support new ones.
πͺ© And the whole show thrives on the idea that growth comes from being seen, coached, and encouraged in public ππ»
Thatβs the magic of community, where people who push you, cheer for you, and remind you youβre not alone on the journey. And it all starts with getting involved.
Get out there & participate,
β Brittany
